Read all the way to the end 🙂
From where I stand regarding wardrobe making inspiration, it’s the high end and haute couture collections that I usually gravitate to for ideas — even for everyday wear. But do I want to look like a clothing catalog? Generally, no. However, if the aesthetics of the catalog are appealing to me, then why not? Clothing retailers, whatever their price point, presumably put a lot of work into the color stories and layouts. So, while I won’t be buying their garments (maybe a cute necklace I spotted in J. Jill), I want to thank the companies for providing color inspiration. Do I want to emulate the RTW item that costs less than my fabric, even though it will not pass my picky-ness quotient? No. If the aesthetics appeal to me, then I am willing to emulate the color story and make a different version of what’s in the catalog.
Here are a couple of catalogs I have been looking at with different eyes — it is not a surprise that they all follow a similar color story and beachy vibes this summer. The RTW industry seems to follow certain color trends at the same time. These images are from J. Jill, Serena and Lily.
Then comes a dive into the stash. Looking at the stash items, I don’t think I need to go shopping.

I’m feeling hopeful and energized. Let’s see what comes through at the end of this exercise. Cheer me on, dear readers.
A surprise – hope you have a good laugh… thanks to the cartoonist Scott Hilburn.
