Your Slip is Showing. Unending little sewing tasks that keep you from donning your new stuff right away.

The times when you’re ready to don your latest make immediately, and certain things pop up which prevent you from doing that. Or, those unending last minute annoyances….

Oopsy….

1. A slip is requisite for a sheer garment but the only creamy white slip in my possession which I thought would be perfect but did not measure beforehand, is 4” too long. Back to the sewing machine to make it shorter even though the longer length is perfect for another favorite dress? Or make another shorter slip, and hang the new item back in the closet until you make another slip? What would you do?

Okay, not a good picture, but can you see the black camisole? Now imagine the black pants.

Another option: wear a black camisole and black pants, then throw on your new sheer top. You now have a somewhat trendy way to wear sheer tops.

2. Pokey hanging threads which you diligently snipped off, but which breed when you aren’t looking. Some of the pokeys are on the right side of my tunic — the hazards of using a French seam on a ravelly fabric. It ravels faster than you can enclose it in a French seam. What would you do in both these scenarios?

Next time, I promise to refrain from writing about the daffodil tunic.

Have a great summer! Here’s what I will be wearing to a wedding this weekend 🙂 .

  1. Aww, Samina, you look lovely! The emerald green is a fantastic color for you! I don’t have any solutions for the pokey threads – my nemesis as well. On the slip dilemma, how about a temporary tuck so you can use it for the other garment later? Just use long hand basting to secure the tuck for the time being….who will know?

    1. Thank you, dear Charlene. Agree with you about the temporary tuck as the best solution for now. I also considered tucking part of it into the pant waistband to raise the hem, but then there’s fear of slippage out of the waistband as I move around.

  2. Hi Samina! I was going to suggest sewing tucks as well; if you use a 3mm stitch length, it will be easier to remove later. People used to use tucks all the time, especially for children’s clothes, so they could grow into things. Then they would just undo tucks as needed – decorative and functional! Threads Magazine has many articles on tucks, so if you haven’t done them before you could look there for ideas.

I would probably do three tucks in the bottom of the too-long one, then make another slip (or two) in the mean time anyway. If you have an a-line skirt pattern and cut it on the bias, that will make a quick slip out of any fabric. The black underlayer is a good idea too!

Hope you enjoy the wedding – you do look lovely in green!
