Road Testing the BJJ (Blue Jean Jacket)

Hello! I can’t stop writing about my Blue Jean Jacket. I now realize it is so versatile that there is practically no occasion that I cannot wear it, other than a black-tie gala, a South Asian wedding or 100 degree weather outdoors. Here are just three ways I love my jacket; plus a fourth idea for the future.

I am including pictures of my daughter Sarah, who has inspired me and unknowingly, sartorially twinned with me.

1. Casual with a graphic tee:

Didn’t really need a scarf to run errands and such but….. it just feels right. Blue denim-y sandals from Clark’s.

The graphic on my tee is hidden by the scarf; however, I’ve added a separate image so you can see the graphic — wouldn’t you know it, it is a gift from Sarah. Here she is in her own t-shirt with a message.

2. Lunch with friends:

This look made it to the Sewing Fashionistas meeting but with a different linen maxi dress. The blingy sandals feel just right. I feel good in this outfit; isn’t that the whole idea behind good fashion?

A peach linen maxi with a BJJ is magical!! (Linen is from Sew Much Fabric) I love this look and will wear it until the aforementioned 100 degree weather hits; unless the air-conditioned interiors are colder than 70 degrees. I pinned on silk-ribbon “full-bloom” rose and threw on a couple of discreet gold chains.

What do you know, Sarah embroidered a flower directly on her BJJ during an embroidery class.

3. Business casual:

… is just asking for a BJJ paired with a button-down (or button-up) shirt. Can you see Sarah wearing her crisp, striped shirt under the denim? Chic! I have not paired my jacket with a button-down shirt yet.

4. Elevated to evening:

Future outfit!

Warning: do not try a BJJ for a black tie event or a formal wedding (well, you can try, since we live in a free country). But slightly less formal evening parties and events where bling is appropriate? Can do. So, above is a future outfit; sheer metallic knit from Sew Much Fabric with toned down glitter and the BJJ. Not sure yet of the actual garment I will make with the metallic knit — I’m thinking lined, loose pants. Or a maxi dress with a separate slip rather than a lining. I’m open to your ideas plus how to style it to make the look complete. So, ready, set, go….

Feel free to comment ….

  1. Nice job and versatile wardrobe garment. Wear it a bunch before the hot weather gets here. How did you manage no wrinkles in the peach linen dress?

    1. Thank you, Cathy! It’s already quite hot already so the jacket may have to hibernate this summer. Secret to the non-wrinkly linen is do not sit or move around before the photo shoot. 🙂 Seriously, I’m wearing a slippery fabric slip under it — that helps a little. But, wrinkles are part of wearing linen and I don’t dislike them….

      1. I was hoping you had a secret method for the linen. Peach is a color I love. Do you wash your linen? Considered buying some linen online earlier today.

You can always take it with you during the summer in case the air conditioning is cranked up too high.

      2. Yes, I pre-wash the linen on a normal cycle (warm water) and dry it in a cool dryer — it will shrink. After sewing it up, I do wash it and dry it on the rack. It will lose the crisp sheen, and If you prefer the crisp new linen look, I would suggest dry clean only. But I like the washed linen look even though I do iron it.
