Diana the Hunting Goddess Inspired the House of Dior. Does She Inspire a Fashion Sewer?

…. it’s all explained in a video of their Ready to Wear Spring/Summer 2025 collection:

1. A statue of Diana the Huntress (or goddess of hunting) displayed in Paris’ Louvre museum, played a key role as inspiration for said collection. Fascinating. How did Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri lean into the hunting goddess look? Take a look and be inspired yourself…..

While the toga in this statue has material on both shoulders, there are other one-shouldered sculpture interpretations of Diana the Huntress with a bare right shoulder (and a bare boob) which I have not included here. The House of Dior really leaned into the one-shouldered vibe in their collection.

I was enthralled by the video (link above) which delves into the inspiration, the making of the collection and runway show, where a real modern day archery “artist” was brought on to be part of it! The archer, herself dressed in the same look as the models walking the runway, shot arrows in a glass tunnel while the models walked around it. Plus, I love it when the actual atelier workers are shown sewing and discussing the pieces. I love being a YouTube rat.

2. Ms Grazia Chiuri also dug into Dior sportswear archives from the 1960s and 1970s collections by Marc Bohan (designer for the house during that time). The result was a an imagining of the DIOR letters screen printed to look like ho-hum stripes until you look closely; the re-imagining is applied to pant sides, jackets, tops and bags slung across the body as if the model is carrying the bow and arrows across her back — just like Diana the Huntress. So, the sewing part of this post…

Does the House of Dior ever look at sewing patterns? Over time, there have been “Diana the Huntress” looks peppered throughout sewing pattern collections. Fashion sewers here on earth can and do wear the one-shouldered look suited to their own non-huntress lives.

If you are truly inspired, here are some patterns; alas some may no longer be available. Read to the end ….

Vogue Pattern by Donna Karan (unavailable)

This Donna Karan pattern (above) was released a couple of decades ago, and is no longer available; mainly because the design houses of Donna Karan and DKNY have pulled their licensing agreements from the sewing pattern market. If you own Donna Karans and/or DKNYs, hang on to them. I purchased this one years ago for the two-sleeved version and the beautiful wraparound design lines.

Today’s Fit by. Sandra Betzina

Also unavailable through Vogue Patterns is Today’s Fit by Sandra Betzina #1442, issued by Vogue Patterns, also a long time ago. You may find it through the designer’s website, Power Sewing. This, too, is such a modern and arty interpretation of the one shouldered look that I loved it, and —- it has a supporting strap. There is a Power Sewing video all about making this dress! You can see Sandra actually wearing and sewing this dress.

Simplicity

Outfit pictured in Threads magazine. The pattern is still available from Simplicity Pattern Company.

The third pattern is good old Simplicity 9789, which has a version with a shoulder strap and one without; both versions of the top give off the hunting goddess vibe, in my opinion. As an aside, this pattern includes a very easy and flattering skirt, all meant for knit fabrics.

Now for a little story. At the sewing fashionista meeting I attend, I asked my friends what I should make with a navy and white striped jersey. Roz’ suggestion was a one shouldered long dress. Me, and one-shouldered?? I was confused — I mean, isn’t it age inappropriate? Also, a strapless bra doesn’t have enough strength to hold me up. What do I hear next? The entire group of attendees, friends all, started up a chorus (in unison) encouraging me to make the one-shouldered look. Yikes. So far, I have not. Maybe I can get the look without baring one shoulder. Gawd! I’m not even making sense here.

May you find your inner goddess, and may you always be inspired to make fashion.
