Projects I Previously Didn’t Intend to Share With You, But Will Do So

I’ve been writing about fashion and sewing these past couple of months but nothing that replenished my own wardrobe since November. You would think I have not been sewing at all for a couple of months. Not so, I’ve been sewing — just not for my own wardrobe. Here are a three projects which were not supposed to go up on this blog, but here we are.

1. Kurta Maxi — for my aunt

A maxi with kurta construction for my aunt who has limited mobility; plus, she needed it to be hundred percent soft, lightweight cotton. Do you realize that it’s hard to find apparel cotton with those qualities? There is quilting cotton — which was heavy for our purposes. Cotton lawn is too sheer; I mean, there was always something which made a certain fabric unsuited to her requirements. Then, I bought a piece of green checked shirting from my friend Kasey, and that filled the bill.

There are previous posts on how the traditional South Asian Kurta comes together, which can be accessed if you type the word “kurta” in the search box at top right.

A very good friend holding up the maxi kurta since my aunt could not model it.

2. Hidden Project.

Blacked out for now.

This is a delicious, fun project which I have to keep secret for just a little while longer; sorryyyyy…. Just let me say that this is the first time I have sewn with this particular fabric (to be revealed in good time) and it is easier than I thought. Are you hating me yet for keeping it under wraps?

3. Fixed Badly Fitting Bed Linen.

There. Fixed it.

A home decor adjustment which I wouldn’t need to do if the manufacturers of bed linen had their act together. In short, their queen size duvet cover was at least 10 inches larger than the actual queen size duvet; the extra fabric made the entire bed look awfully sloppy. What the h—-? Not wanting to return the nice blue linen duvet cover because of something I could easily fix myself, I got down to reducing the size of the cover to fit the duvet. After careful measurements (noticing that the cover used French seams throughout), I cut away the extra fabric and sewed it closed. I had to be careful that the corner ties of the cover and duvet were included in the corner seams. The entire adjustment took no more than 45 minutes. My bed looks so much better! Inanimate decor benefits from a good fit, too. Right?

4. Surreptitiously sharing part a work in progress: discussion and nerdiness to come.

Patterns, denim and topstitching thread

Rejoice! Spring is almost here.

  1. Enjoyed the glimpse into your “secret” projects. We all have them.

After showing a friend some minor (to me) adjustments I had made to purchased garments she said, “So, we schmuck have to live with what we get.”

    Indeed, sewing is our superpower.
